Clerks 3 is a 2022 American comedy film written, produced, directed, and edited by Kevin Smith. It serves as the sequel to the 1994 and 2006 Clerks films, and is the ninth overall feature film set in the View Askewniverse. Starring Brian O’Halloran, Jeff Anderson, Trevor Fehrman, Austin Zajur, Jason Mewes, Rosario Dawson and Smith; the film revolves around Randal Graves, who after surviving a heart attack, wants to make a movie with Dante Hicks about their lives at the Quick Stop.

Clerks 3 FULL MOVIE:  

15 years after Dante (Brian O’Halloran) and Randal (Jeff Anderson) bought the Quick Stop, the pair’s life continues much the same as before, including hockey games above the store and dealing with Jay and Silent Bob (Jason Mewes and Kevin Smith), who have taken over the former RST Video and turned it into a legal marijuana dispensary, although they still secretively deal outside the building for nostalgia’s sake. Dante, meanwhile, is still mourning the deaths of Becky (Rosario Dawson) and their unborn daughter Grace after a car accident in 2006, and privately sees her spirit following him around and urging him to move on. One day, while Elias (Trevor Fehrman) and his friend Blockchain (Austin Zajur) are trying to sell Randal on their new NFT kites (which contain an image of the Buddy Christ), Randal suffers a near-fatal heart attack. After the surgery, Randal’s doctor (Amy Sedaris) urges Dante to keep Randal’s mood up while he recovers, and warns that he is also at risk for the same kind of heart attack. Recovering afterwards, Randal decides he has wasted his life and needs a new purpose, declaring he will make a movie about his and Dante’s lives at the Quick Stop.

After holding some failed auditions, Randal decides he will not only write and direct but also star in the film as himself, alongside Dante in a supporting role. Rather than cast actors, they decide to cast their friends and actual customers to play themselves. This includes Jay, Silent Bob, and Veronica (Marilyn Ghigliotti), the latter of whom agrees after rekindling her romance with Dante. Dante takes on the producer role and convinces his ex-fianceé Emma (Jennifer Schwalbach Smith) to loan the production $30,000 with Dante’s half of the Quick Stop as collateral. Jay and Silent Bob are brought on as cinematographers (with Silent Bob deciding to shoot the film in black-and-white), and Elias and Blockchain serving as production assistants.

Clerks III 2022 Film Review:

This film is exactly that: the artist looking back at Clerks 1 (mostly 1, but a little bit of 2 as well) through that nostalgic lens. Smith’s reflection on his own mortality bleed through to the characters flashing back on their lives in the same manner. Smith called this film his “Jersey version of Cinema Paradiso”, but I saw it more as his version of Fellini’s 8 1/2, especially given that he is literally holding a camera in the film.

The trilogy is now thematically complete: Clerks 1 embodied youth, part II aging, part III dying. While Clerks III may be an interesting enough art piece for these reasons, it’s just nowhere near as funny as the other 2. To be fair, it’s not really trying to be most of the time with the heavy themes it’s taking on. But still, it is a Clerks film and a comedy, therefore it does have humorous lines and moments all throughout, even in the more morose moments. And these were simply nowhere near as funny as the other 2 Clerks films.

Overall this film did an excellent job on the nostalgia & fan service if Clerks means a lot to you personally, but otherwise it is the weakest entry in the series in terms of comedic substance.
